Amazon’s Just Walk Out (JWO) cashierless technology has found a welcoming home in sports stadiums, a trend that will continue this fall, with a total of 14 new stores joining those already in place at Lumen Field in Seattle and Commanders Field outside Washington, D.C., as well as Baltimore’s first JWO store at M&T Bank Stadium. In May 2023 events venues including Six Flags also began using the JWO technology.

At Lumen Field, which began hosting JWO stores in 2022, this fall will see the addition of five new JWO concessions stores and one RFID-enabled store, which enables these checkout-free stores to include merchandise like clothing, hats and fan gear. The new stores will bring the Lumen Field total to 15 stores, the most of any venue.

At Commanders Field, seven new stores will open within the stadium, the largest number launched at one time in a sports stadium. When these openings are complete, JWO technology will be available in more than 80 arenas in the U.S., UK, Australia and Canada.

Additionally, JWO technology is powering a growing number of university stores; it’s now in operation at more than 30 schools worldwide. New deployments in 2024 include stores at Emory University, the University of Maine, the University of Virginia, Ursinus College and Texas Christian University.

In July 2024 Amazon leveraged AI with its JWO system to simultaneously process data from multiple sources, a multi-modal foundation model designed to more accurately connect products with the customers purchasing them.
