GU (pronounced “gee-you”), a sister brand of apparel retailer Uniqlo, will make a splashy, multi-channel entrance into the U.S. next month with the simultaneous debut of its ecommerce site and a 10,225-square-foot NYC flagship. The two-story location in the trendy SoHo neighborhood will offer men’s and women’s clothing as well as shoes, bags and accessories.
The GU store will highlight the retailer’s brand philosophy of offering curated collections designed to create multiple style possibilities. As part of the Sept. 19 opening celebration, GU has collaborated with the Undercover fashion brand to offer apparel for all genders, including pieces with detachable sleeves to create multiple silhouettes with one casual garment.
For the store’s opening weekend, GU will create an interactive event combining fashion, fun and culture. The first 300 customers who make a minimum purchase will receive a tote bag designed by Shantell Martin. The bags will contain GU favorites and the chance to win GU shopping trips valued up to $250 as well as exclusive Tokyo culture experiences in New York. More information is available on the GU events page.
Online, GU will feature best-selling products such as its “barrel leg” bottoms. Introduced this past spring, these pants are defined by a barrel-like curve and three-dimensional roundness from hips to hem to create a strongly tapered silhouette. Additional product highlights include the mini skort and super-wide cargo pants, as well as new releases and U.S.-exclusive colorways.
