Alibaba Group has given Eddie Wu, already Group CEO and head of the Alibaba Cloud unit, responsibility for its biggest revenue generator, the Taobao and Tmall Group (TTG). Wu is replacing Trudy Dai, one of Alibaba’s original 18 founders, as CEO of TTG, but she will remain with the company to help set up an asset management company.
“Eddie’s leadership of both Alibaba Cloud and TTG will ensure total focus on, and significant and sustained investment in, our two core businesses of cloud computing and ecommerce, as well as enabling TTG to transform through technology innovation,” said Joe Tsai, Chairman of Alibaba Group in a statement.
In March 2023 Alibaba restructured itself into six distinct businesses in a bid to drive agility and shareholder value. Both Tsai and Wu stepped into their current roles in September 2023. This was the same time that Alibaba’s former Chairman and CEO Daniel Zhang, who had narrowed his focus to lead the Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Unit, left the company. In November Alibaba abandoned plans to spin off this unit, citing U.S. chip export restrictions.
